+15.3% revenue per visitor after Switzerland got its own concept

A vacation rental provider sells through 15 country shops that share the same template. Our test showed that the same page wins in Germany and loses in Switzerland. The solution was one concept per culture.

A dedicated concept for Switzerland turned the result positive.

Starting point

One template for 15 country shops

Our client lists vacation homes and sells through 15 country subsidiaries. Everything is managed centrally. To keep costs and complexity low, all country shops ran on the same template.

Our assignment was international growth through ongoing optimization. The first concept was meant to make listings clearer and easier to compare. It started from the German shop and was then supposed to apply to all countries.

Approach

One template, tested in three countries

After analyzing the target audience and their problems in the shop, we rebuilt the results list. Listings now appeared in a table with clearly organized facts. This variant ran simultaneously in Germany, France, and Switzerland against the original.

Across all countries combined, the test showed no winner. Only the breakdown by country revealed what had happened.

Bar chart of bookings for the new variant compared to the original: Germany +12.5%, France −2.1%, Switzerland −14.7%

Confidence: Germany 93%, Switzerland 97%. In France, there was no measurable effect.

In Germany, 12.5% more users booked. In France, nothing changed. In Switzerland, 14.7% fewer booked. The same page was a win in one country and a loss in the neighboring one.

Analysis

Why Swiss customers book differently than Germans

Language wasn't the problem. The copy had already been adapted to Swiss terms, such as "Ferien" instead of "Urlaub".

The difference lay in the personas. In the German shop, more people have a strong sense of order. They want structured facts to compare listings. In the Swiss shop, more customers process information visually. Images and the stories behind them carry more weight there.

So the table was a perfect fit for German customers. For Swiss customers, it took away exactly what they needed to book.

Result

A dedicated concept turns Switzerland positive

For Switzerland, we developed a second concept. Instead of a table, images and short stories carry the information. The layout is looser.

In the second test, the booking rate rose by 13.5% (93% confidence). Revenue per visitor rose by 15.3% (94% confidence). That put Switzerland even ahead of the German result. The gain held up in live operation, too.

Wireframes of the winning variants: Germany with comparison table (+12.5% bookings), Switzerland with images and stories (+13.5% bookings)

Both tests led to an intercultural framework concept. After that, all 15 country shops and the customer communication received their own adaptations, without diluting the overall concept.

Learnings

What this means for your international shop

Analyze tests by country. A neutral overall result can hide a winner and a loser.

Measure the distribution of personas per market. If you know who buys in which country, you can address each group directly.

Translating isn't enough. Every culture needs its own approach.

Cultural differences can be measured. So check every derived concept in a test with real users.

The knowledge applies beyond the shop. Newsletters, campaigns, and service benefit just as much.
