Clear personalization strategy and roadmap for digital channels at ALDI SÜD

How clear goals and a focus on the right levers gave us a fast start toward a user-centric, cross-channel customer experience.

Starting Point & Objective

ALDI SÜD recognized the importance of personalized communication early on and is actively working to give users a relevant customer experience that fits their individual preferences and needs. The goal is to support users in a targeted, individual way as they prepare for and complete their shopping across different touchpoints. Plenty of data, broad audience knowledge and a variety of personalization approaches are already available across all digital channels.

The challenge:

The digital channels run individual personalization activities. These should be scaled and coordinated into an overarching strategy for multichannel personalization. Each channel had its own goals, specific challenges and different levels of maturity in personalization. It was a strong foundation, and the next step was to turn it into a concrete plan with system and structure.

Project goal:

For every digital channel, ALDI SÜD wanted a clear strategy with relevant use cases and concrete measures for personalization, as the basis for an efficient, targeted development of personalization. The first focus was on bringing clarity and structure to the individual channels, in order to build on that and develop a personalized and consistent cross-channel strategy.

A systematic, agile path to clarity, structure and concrete measures

Analysis by channel

In interactive workshops, we worked out the individual strategic role, goals and characteristics of each channel and documented them across teams. This made sure that measures and use cases support the channels' strategic goals, and that there is a shared, cross-functional understanding of personalization on each channel.

Focus on the most important segments for a concrete start

For each channel, we selected three core user segments to get the most value from personalization. These segments play a key role in ALDI SÜD's core business in terms of product categories and audience needs. By choosing specific segments, we reduced complexity and laid the groundwork for a fast start.

Idea generation & use case development

For these top segments, we developed tailored ideas and personalization concepts together with the respective channel owners and shared them across channels. Starting from data segments, we dug deep into the underlying user needs so we could develop a customer-centric approach.

Transparent prioritization

We assessed all use cases for business value, feasibility and data availability, and prioritized them together. Clear prioritization brings structure and focus to the complex goal of a personalized, cross-channel customer journey and makes concrete progress visible.

Structured roadmaps

The result: structured, individually tailored roadmaps for each channel, with the most effective measures for the next development step. Through overarching planning, we made sure that dependencies and progress across channels are visible and plannable.

Structure, clarity and the ability to act

The project delivered the following results for ALDI SÜD:

Focus on the top use cases

The focus was not on collecting many ideas. It was on identifying and preparing the most effective personalization levers for each channel. Every channel has a clear picture of which potential it is working on to make the value of personalization visible and put it to targeted use.

Red checkmark icon

Clear measures for implementation

The results are concretely described measures and use cases that can be implemented with the current infrastructure. This turns the business potential of personalization directly into measurable value for ALDI SÜD.

Red checkmark icon

Lasting structure and transparency

The roadmaps give everyone involved at ALDI SÜD orientation. They create transparency about goals, responsibilities and next steps. Complexity in personalization drops significantly because goals and measures become concrete.

A strong basis for further development

The structured approach makes it possible to develop personalization in each channel in a targeted way and to gradually realize synergies between channels. Work continues on follow-up topics such as a consistent data foundation.

Consistency and overview

The individual measures are bundled, synchronized consistently across ALDI SÜD's channels and aligned with the overarching goal. This breaks down silos, and cross-functional teams work together toward one overarching goal.
